After the heavy snowfall and ice accumulation, water damage can occur when the snow melts.

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

Snow and ice on your roof can be heavy especially after a fresh snowfall or a layer of ice accumulates. Preventing water damage during the winter is very important for the protection of your home.  Snow accumulation around your foundation can also be a problem and cause water damage.  Frozen soil can prevent the melting snow and ice from absorbing into the ground.  The runoff can possibly enter your home and cause water damage.

Here a few tips to prevent water damage from melting ice and snow.

Clean your gutters and downspouts.  Remove any leaves and debris that may be blocking water from moving freely.  This can help with the runoff from the melting ice and snow to move from your roof and into the ground away from your foundation.  Clean gutters and downspouts can also help prevent ice dams as the water re-freezes in the cold weather.

Another way to reduce the amount of snow melting is to reduce the amount of snow buildup on your roof.  Clearing the snow pack with a snow rake will help with the quantity of snowmelt.  Water damage can happen especially when runoff re-freezes.
